Are owls mammals?
Owls are not mammals; they are oviparous animals. The vast majority of them are nocturnal, and they are colorblind, as well as the only birds that cannot distinguish colors. So what are their living habits like?
Living habits of owls
1. Food
Owls feed mainly on rodents, but they also eat insects, small birds, lizards, fish and other animals. When eating, they often swallow their food whole, and at that time they can gather the indigestible remains such as bones, feathers, hair and chitin from the food into small pellets, which are expelled through the esophagus and mouth.
2. Habitat
Owls often inhabit various types of habitats such as low mountains, hills, tundra, deserts, plains, marshes, lakeshores and grasslands, and are especially common in open plain grasslands, marshes and lakeshore areas.
3. Reproduction
Owls usually pair one male with one female, but a few species such as the Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus) pair in polygynous and polyandrous arrangements. Their breeding generally runs from March to May-June, and in some cases begins as early as January. In addition, the number of eggs owls lay per clutch varies; larger species lay fewer eggs, while smaller species usually lay more.
Although owls are colorblind, their eyesight is indeed very sharp, so even on pitch-black nights they can capture prey quickly and accurately.
