Are rabbits mammals? An analysis of rabbit animal classification
When we mention rabbits, the image of “cute” immediately comes to mind, with their pointy ears. So, are cute rabbits mammals? What characteristics do they have?
1. Are rabbits mammals?
Rabbits are mammals. They belong to the viviparous warm-blooded animals, have hair on their bodies, and nurse their young through mammary glands.
2. What characteristics do rabbits have?
1. Body size
Classified by body size, they can be divided into large rabbits, medium rabbits and small rabbits. Large rabbits weigh about 5 to 8 kg (a few exceed 8 kg), medium rabbits weigh about 2 to 4 kg, and small rabbits weigh less than 2 kg. Generally speaking, a rabbit's body can be divided into four parts: the head and neck, the trunk, the four limbs and the tail. Body surface: covered with fur, which has an insulating effect. Coat color: mostly white, black, gray, grayish white, grayish brown, yellowish gray, light earthy yellow, and also mixed colors. Rabbit teeth incisors: suitable for cutting food. Molars: suitable for grinding food. A rabbit's tail is short and fluffy, and it can curl up like a ball, very cute. Mode of movement: jumping; a rabbit's forelimbs are shorter than its hind limbs, which helps with jumping.
2. Head
A rabbit's head is relatively long and can be divided into the facial region (in front of the eyes) and the cranial region of the head and neck (behind the eyes). The facial region accounts for about 2/3 of the total length of the head.
3. Mouth
A rabbit's mouth is relatively short, with upper and lower lips, among which the upper lip has a vertical cleft (also called a harelip), the incisors are exposed, and there are whiskers around the mouth. The upper lip is split in the middle, a typical three-lobed mouth, very cute. In addition to two large protruding front teeth, a rabbit has 28 teeth in total.[2]
4. Nose
A rabbit's nostrils are relatively large and oval-shaped, with the inner edges connected to the vertical cleft of the upper lip.
5. Eyes
A rabbit's eyeballs are round, with a monocular field of view of 180°, so rabbits see things with one eye at a time. Rabbits of different breeds and coat colors also have different eye colors. Rabbit eyes can be red, blue, black, gray and various other colors, and some rabbits even have different colors in their left and right eyes.
6. Ears
A rabbit's ears are long and large, and can even exceed the length of the head; some breeds also have smaller, drooping ears. The shape, length and thickness of rabbit ears can also reflect the characteristics of the breed. For example, the ears of native Chinese rabbits are short, thick, upright and large.
7. Fur
Rabbit fur can be shaved off and sold. It is soft and fine, and can be used to make clothing and so on.
In addition, rabbits are timid animals. When raising and managing them, everyone should try to avoid making noises that frighten the rabbits.
