What are the symbolic meanings of the egret? A full explanation of its symbolism

The genus Egretta comprises a total of 13 species of birds, among which the great egret, the intermediate egret, the little egret (Egretta garzetta) and the snowy egret all have entirely white body plumage, and are commonly known worldwide as egrets. So what are the symbolic meanings of the egret?

1. An introduction to the symbolic meanings of the egret

The egret is a symbol of longevity, happiness, freedom, purity and nobility. The egret's feathers are highly valued; its plumage is mostly white, and in the breeding season it has long decorative nuptial plumes. Its habits are broadly similar to those of other herons, but some species perform courtship displays, including showing off their feathers.

2. The egret's distribution range in China

China has 20 species of birds in the family Ardeidae, among which those of the genus Egretta are the most precious. In Sanduoqiao Village, Baishiyi Town, Jiulongpo District, Chongqing, there is the country's first egret nature reserve. The reserve is home to more than 20,000 herons of various kinds. Xiamen has 10 types of herons, accounting for 50% of the total number of heron species in China. Among these, all 5 species of the genus Egretta are present, reflecting the typicality and representativeness of Xiamen's geographical location and wetland environment in the distribution of heron resources. In recent years, the number of herons in Xiamen has reached as high as 30,000 each year; according to international standards, this shows that the habitats of the intertidal zone of Xiamen's sea area and the lake surface formed by enclosing the sea are important wetlands for herons in China and internationally. Egrets are also found in Zaolin Bay, Yizheng City, Jiangsu.

There are also many egrets on Qilin Mountain in Fengqi Village, Wangchuan Town.

After the Three Gorges Dam was impounded, it became an important habitat for the waterbird the egret, which brought about major changes in the egret's distribution in China. This has made the area one of the best places for birdwatching.
