How to Keep Teapot Fish? Practical Care Methods and Precautions
Teapot fish are distributed in Mexico. They are one of the more difficult species to keep among livebearing fish, and are especially hard to keep alive in aquariums without sunlight exposure. So how do you keep teapot fish?
1. Choosing Bait
Teapot fish are omnivorous fish. In daily keeping, feed them live water fleas, chironomid larvae and other animal-based bait, and you can also feed some fresh spinach leaves or lettuce leaves. They also like to nibble on aquatic plants and the green algae on the tank walls.
2. Feeding Method
On the first day after buying teapot fish, do not feed them at first. Let them adapt to the new environment before feeding, which will be better. Even when feeding, do so in moderation; too much will overfeed them to death.
3. Water Quality Requirements
To keep teapot fish, you must first condition the water. Once the water is well conditioned, then put the fish into the water. Never use tap water directly to keep fish; the chlorine in the water will kill the fish. Teapot fish relatively prefer weakly alkaline water quality. Placing black soil will make the water quality acidic, so it is recommended to use coral bone. After changing in new water, you can add a little table salt to prevent disease.
Male teapot fish have a small body and small belly, with a rod-shaped anal fin, and an adult body length of 7~8 cm; female teapot fish have a large body and large belly, with a fan-shaped anal fin, and a body length that can reach 10~12 cm.
