How to keep moonfish? Mastering the right breeding method is key
Moonfish is a kind of ovoviviparous fish with high ornamental value, and fish keepers who love raising fish all like to keep a few, so how do you keep moonfish?
1. Water quality requirements: Moonfish do not have high requirements for water quality; generally keeping the water pH at around 7.4 is enough. When changing to new water, a little salt can be added.
2. Temperature requirements: If kept in a planted tank, the survival temperature for moonfish is between 18-28°C, and the optimal temperature is around 22-26°C. In addition, when moonfish first enter a planted tank, they may show a series of reactions because they are adapting to the new environment, such as suddenly swimming rapidly, occasionally swimming slowly, and sometimes jumping. These are signs of not adapting to the environment, and a few days of quiet rest will be enough. If kept in a fish tank, the water temperature needs to be maintained at 25-26°C, which helps the growth of moonfish.
3. Food requirements: Moonfish are omnivorous tropical fish. Generally, feeding them small-granule tropical fish feed is enough. They can also be fed bloodworms, frozen bloodworms, live water fleas, and the like, and some chopped spinach or lettuce leaves can also be fed.
4. Mixed keeping requirements: When keeping moonfish, if they are already a stable variety, it is best not to keep them mixed with other tropical fish, especially red swordtails; these two kinds of fish are very prone to variation.
5. Breeding: Moonfish can breed after growing for 5-6 months. At this time, the male and female moonfish in the same tank will mate on their own, and there is no need to worry about the issue of breeding fish. When it is near the time for moonfish to give birth, the abdomen of the female moonfish becomes swollen, and a large black spot appears near the anus, indicating that she is about to give birth. Each time, about 30-40 fry can be produced.
Overall, moonfish are still very easy to keep; as long as you control the temperature well, feed them well, and do basic management such as water quality, it is enough.
