How to keep rainforest scorpions? Detailed care methods and precautions
The rainforest scorpion, also known as the Peter heterometrus, is a common scorpion in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and other places, and can be kept as a pet. So how do you keep a rainforest scorpion?
1. Choosing equipment
The rainforest scorpion likes to climb, so when choosing equipment, it is best to choose a plastic aquarium with a sturdy lid but good ventilation, with a basic size about four times the scorpion's body size or more.
2. Choosing specimens
Select some healthy rainforest scorpions and place them in the aquarium.
3. Temperature requirements
Rainforest scorpions have high temperature requirements. Generally, the suitable daytime temperature is around 25-32 degrees, and at night a temperature above 20 degrees is sufficient. In winter, an electric mat can be used for heating, while in the summer in Hong Kong, China, no insulation equipment is needed, as long as the terrarium is placed in a ventilated area. If they live at too low a temperature (15°C) for too long, besides affecting their growth rate, it will also cause them to stop eating and even die. During low winter temperatures, the keeper must provide insulation for them.
4. Humidity requirements
The terrarium should preferably be maintained at around 75 - 85%, and the substrate should be misted with a sprayer from time to time to keep it moist to a certain degree. However, inside the terrarium, it is best to provide a slightly dry and warm place for it to rest.
5. Feeding requirements
Rainforest scorpions mainly eat live insects, such as crickets and mealworms, and adult scorpions can be fed small reptiles or small mice. The Asian rainforest scorpion generally has a moderate appetite, and feeding once or twice a week is sufficient. Leftover scraps should be cleaned up as soon as possible.
Overall, rainforest scorpions are still quite easy to keep, as long as you choose a good aquarium, select good specimens, and manage humidity, temperature and other care tasks well.
