How to Raise Earthworms for Fishing? A Detailed Guide to Breeding Methods and Techniques
Many people use earthworms as bait when fishing, but they cannot always use them all up. It is a pity to simply throw away the leftover earthworms, so you can keep them and use them next time. So how do you raise earthworms for fishing?
1. Container and Soil
You need to prepare a suitable container. It is best to choose one with strong breathability that is opaque to light, such as a wooden box or a clay pot, and it should also have drainage holes at the bottom.
Humus soil is better for the soil. You can use garden soil mixed with fertilizer or decaying leaves and branches and let it slowly ferment. Once it is fully decomposed, you can put the earthworms in.
Note that heat is released during decomposition, so do not add the earthworms before it is fully decomposed.
2. Feeding
Food should also be placed in the breeding container. Earthworms are omnivorous animals; they eat humus, animal manure, soil bacteria, fungi, and the decomposition products of these substances. Fruit peels, vegetable leaves, porridge, and rice-washing water are also their food. Earthworms have a keen sense of taste and like sweet and sour foods.
3. Watering
Earthworms like moist, fertile soil, so during the process of raising earthworms you also need to keep the soil moist and water appropriately. But do not water too much; just keep the soil slightly moist.
4. Temperature
The most suitable living temperature for earthworms is around 20°C. Below 5°C they become dormant, and below 0°C they die. At 15°C they can reproduce normally.
If it exceeds 33°C, they will crawl away or die. Therefore, raising earthworms requires choosing a suitable temperature environment. In addition to paying attention to rain protection, sun protection, maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity, and feeding on time, you should also clean up the earthworms' excrement at the right time.
If the earthworms are not used for a long time, then after about half a year you should also replace part of the bedding and add some new bedding.
