How to Raise a Yellow-Bellied Slider? Detailed Guide to Care and Precautions
The yellow-bellied slider, also called the yellow-bellied slider turtle, is a fairly popular ornamental turtle. It has bright yellow eye spots behind its eyes, is a good swimmer, and likes to bask. How do you raise a yellow-bellied slider well?
How to raise a yellow-bellied slider
1. Prepare a fish tank of moderate size, and create deep-water, shallow-water, and no-water zones inside. You can place stones or bricks, or custom-made steps for it to bask on. The deepest part of the water must cover the turtle's shell, and a basking lamp can be installed in the no-water zone.
2. For diet, mainly feed turtle food, small fish, small shrimp, mealworms, vegetable leaves, etc. If the turtle is relatively small, cut fish, shrimp, and other meat into fine pieces and feed with tweezers. Feed 1-2 times a day.
3. Yellow-bellied sliders eat in the water, so the water quality must be kept clean and changed frequently. Tap water used should first be left to stand and expose to sunlight to remove chlorine.
4. Let the yellow-bellied slider bask in sunlight as much as possible. This helps the turtle increase its appetite; using the sun's ultraviolet rays to sterilize can reduce the occurrence of disease; increased light can also supplement calcium for the turtle, and the turtle's colors will become more vivid.
5. When the temperature is lower, the yellow-bellied slider's activity will decrease. Generally keep the temperature at 24-28°C.
6. Try to create a quiet growing environment for the yellow-bellied slider, and do not take it out to play often.
Yellow-bellied sliders are relatively easy to keep and not troublesome to care for. Some yellow-bellied sliders are quite lively and will even “break out of prison” on their own. Keeping them adds a bit of fun to your life.
