The Correct Way to Use Quicklime for Disinfection Against Swine Fever
Lime is a natural disinfectant. Because it is cheap, easy to buy and convenient to use, it is often widely used as a disinfectant on pig farms. Especially during outbreaks of swine fever, disinfection is very necessary. So how do you use quicklime to disinfect against swine fever?
1. How do you use quicklime to disinfect against swine fever?
1. Quicklime itself has no disinfecting function. Only when quicklime is mixed with water and reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, commonly known as slaked lime, does it have strong alkalinity and a good disinfecting effect. Therefore, when using quicklime for disinfection, never scatter quicklime directly in the pig pen.
2. First spray an appropriate amount of water on the floor of the pig house, then evenly scatter quicklime in every corner of the pig pen floor. It reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, which kills many kinds of bacteria and viruses. It has a very good killing effect on foot-and-mouth disease virus, swine fever virus and many kinds of bacteria in the environment; at the same time, it also has a very good killing effect on parasites in the pig house environment.
3. In an empty pig house, first clean the walls and floor thoroughly. Mix fresh quicklime with water to make a 20% lime milk, and brush it onto the walls or floor of the pig house, especially the corners and cracks, so that no dead corner is left. In this way, it can both disinfect and sterilize and beautify the environment. The disinfection should be carried out before the pig house is newly put into use. For old pens, use it after clearing out the manure and after the pigs are sent to market.
4. Quicklime is unstable and readily absorbs carbon dioxide from the air to form calcium carbonate, which makes it ineffective. Therefore, buy quicklime in small amounts and use it as you go, mixing it fresh and using it immediately. Whatever is left over should not be used. If the floor is concrete, it is not suitable to scatter it directly on the floor.
2. Amount of quicklime to use
1. For disinfecting pig house walls, pens, floors and so on, prepare a 10%-20% lime milk. For disinfecting around manure pits and on damp, shaded ground, mix each 1 kg of quicklime with 350 ml of water and apply it by brushing.
2. Soak straw bags or gunny sacks in 20% lime milk and place them at the entrance of the pig farm, so that people coming and going step on them and disinfect the soles of their shoes. This can prevent diseases caused by pathogens carried in by people entering and leaving.
During a swine fever outbreak, disinfection and prevention work must be done well to avoid contracting swine fever and causing losses from reduced production.
