How long is the farming cycle of the giant freshwater prawn? A detailed explanation of the farming time
The giant freshwater prawn is currently one of the three shrimp species with the highest farming volume in the world, and it is a large freshwater shrimp, so how long is the farming cycle of the giant freshwater prawn?
1. Basic introduction to the giant freshwater prawn
The giant freshwater prawn is a shrimp species of the family Palaemonidae and the genus Macrobrachium, also called the Malaysian prawn, money shrimp, Wan's prawn, white-legged shrimp, etc. Its place of origin is the coast of Ecuador, and it is currently distributed in the tropical regions of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, mainly living in freshwater or brackish water areas.
The giant freshwater prawn is farmed in many provinces in southern China, with Anhui, Zhejiang, Guangdong and other provinces as the main producing areas.
The giant freshwater prawn is rich in nutritional value. According to scientific research, every hundred grams of giant freshwater prawn meat contains 20.6 grams of protein and 0.7 grams of fat, and it also contains a variety of vitamins and trace elements essential to the human body. It is a high-protein, nutritious aquatic product. For fresh eating, it can be cooked as braised large shrimp, pan-fried white shrimp, sauteed shrimp sections, pipa shrimp, stir-fried shrimp, etc. Through processing, it can be made into dried shrimp, dried shelled shrimp and other seafood products.
2. Farming cycle of the giant freshwater prawn
The farming cycle of the giant freshwater prawn is generally 2-4 months. The farming cycle is also related to farming techniques and climate, and the actual farming cycle shall prevail.
3. Points to note in farming the giant freshwater prawn
1. Water should be changed scientifically, because if water changes are not scientific, in the middle and late stages of farming, the pond water becomes too fertile, causing too much fluctuation in the pond water temperature, which easily affects the feeding and growth of the shrimp.
2. Do not blindly deepen the water level. The most suitable water depth for farming the giant freshwater prawn is 1.5-1.8 m. If the water body is too shallow, the water temperature fluctuates greatly and the dissolved oxygen content decreases, which easily affects the growth of the shrimp; if the water body is too deep, the pond bottom cannot receive sunlight, the number of phytoplankton is small, the dissolved oxygen produced by photosynthesis is low, and together with the decomposition of organic matter at the pond bottom, the dissolved oxygen in the lower water layer becomes less and less, worsening the deterioration of the substrate.
3. A suitable aerator should be selected. Paddlewheel aerators are suitable for shallow ponds with a water depth of 1.5-2.0 m; another type is the “impeller-type” aerator, which is suitable for deep ponds with a water depth of 2.0-3.0 m. Many shrimp farmers choose the “impeller-type” aerator. Because the water body of shrimp ponds is relatively shallow, it easily stirs up the bottom mud and forms mud slurry, which is unfavorable for shrimp farming.
