How to Raise Softshell Turtles in Winter? Introduction to Winter Breeding Management Methods
Softshell turtles are nutritious and delicious, and have always been a tonic delicacy, so quite a few people raise softshell turtles. But softshell turtles go into hibernation in winter. So how do you raise softshell turtles in winter?
1. First we need to look at the size of the softshell turtle. If it is a softshell turtle with a body length greater than ten cm, it is an adult large softshell turtle and can hibernate. One or two weeks before hibernation, it should be made to empty its bowels completely, to prevent feces from accumulating in the body and causing intestinal obstruction, which is very dangerous and can be fatal.
2. If it is a small softshell turtle with a body size under ten cm, it will starve to death during hibernation. Softshell turtles do not eat below 20 degrees, so to make it eat you must raise the temperature above 20 degrees.
3. If you are raising a small number of softshell turtles at home, we can put a heating rod in an aquarium and set up a thermostat.
4. If it is large-scale breeding, dig deeper ponds, or use a greenhouse for insulation.
5. Even in winter, softshell turtles still need no less than four hours of light per day, otherwise they will also die.
6. Softshell turtles are very particular about water quality. Too cold or too hot is no good, and too great a temperature difference is also no good. They cannot survive if the water quality is polluted or contains chlorine. Water quality is very important.
7. Above 20 degrees, softshell turtles need to eat. We can feed them fresh small insects, fish and shrimp, and must ensure the food is fresh and uncontaminated and does not contain salt. Some dried shrimp that contain salt are not suitable for feeding softshell turtles and will cause illness.
Softshell turtles hibernate in winter, so when raising them you must take careful care to avoid deaths.
