The alligator snapping turtle is a relatively ferocious turtle species, with a peculiar appearance and a large body. Its head is triangular, with a grayish-brown top scattered with small black spots and several small spiky protrusions, and the head cannot be fully retracted into the shell. So, how do you raise an alligator snapping turtle?

1. Environment

The water depth for keeping turtles is generally just slightly higher than the turtle's shell; it does not need to be too deep. You can provide a rock that rises above the water surface so the turtle can climb up to bask. Turtles need sunlight; if kept entirely indoors, let them bask in the sun often, for more than ten minutes each day. Beginners are advised to use a bare tank.

2. Water temperature

Scientific regulation of water temperature directly affects the weight gain and survival rate of adult turtle breeding. When alligator snapping turtles are kept at 18°C-20°C for a long time, their growth rate is several times slower than at the optimal growth water temperature of 30°C-31°C. Therefore, be sure to keep the turtle-rearing water temperature within 30°C-31°C. On the other hand, when a turtle pond that is being refilled or exposed to the outside happens to encounter severe weather such as heavy rain or a sudden temperature change, precautions should be taken promptly, and every effort should be made to avoid a water temperature fluctuation greater than 2°C.

3. Changing the water

Given high-density intensive turtle farming conditions, turtles have a relatively large food intake and produce a relatively large amount of waste, and the water temperature is also relatively high. Even if the feed provided is green feed, it still pollutes the water quality fairly quickly, and more harmful substances are likely to be produced in the water body. Each time new pond water is added, disinfection is also needed at the same time. Quicklime can be sprinkled once every 7-10 days.

4. Feed

Alligator snapping turtles have fairly omnivorous feeding habits; fish, loach, meat and so on can all become their food. When feeding alligator snapping turtles, the amount of compound feed is generally 1.5%-2.5% of the turtle's total body weight, and the amount of fresh feed is 5%-10%. Feed 3 times a day at fixed times and in fixed amounts, and the range of food provided should be even and broad.

5. Hibernation

From October each year to May of the following year, when the temperature drops below 13°C, the turtle begins to hibernate, until the temperature rises to 18 degrees and it ends. A hibernating turtle does not eat or move, it only sleeps. The simplest hibernation method is to move the turtle indoors to a dark, quiet place and let it hibernate in shallow water (water just above the shell), changing the water once a month. Apart from changing the water, try not to disturb the turtle. Be careful that the temperature does not fall below 6 degrees, otherwise the turtle's life will be endangered. However, it is recommended to use a heating rod in winter, because the mortality rate of natural hibernation is very high. The heating rod is the kind used for keeping tropical fish; set the temperature at about 30 degrees and add a lid to the tank.

6. Prevention and control of diseases

Alligator snapping turtles generally get sick relatively rarely, but under high-density farming conditions they are prone to indigestion. Sick turtles can be force-fed medicated bait containing multi-enzyme tablets (2 tablets per kilogram of turtle). For external injuries, use iodine tincture on a cotton ball to disinfect the affected area; after applying anti-inflammatory tissue-regenerating ointment, it heals in 2-4 days.

In raising alligator snapping turtles, paying attention to water quality, water temperature, feed and so on is the key to successful breeding. In addition, they should also be managed reasonably and scientifically.
