How to Raise Snakehead Fish at Home? Detailed Guide to Home Aquaculture Methods
The snakehead, also known as the snakehead mullet, is a rather ferocious carnivorous fish. Because it has few bones and a high meat yield, it is deeply loved by people, and it is currently being farmed in many areas. So how do you raise snakehead fish at home?
1. Build a pond
Snakehead fish like to grow in places with good water quality and lush aquatic plants, so when building a pond, try to choose a place with good water quality for construction, and then build a pond of an appropriate size according to the number of fish. Generally, a pond depth of about 2 m is suitable. After the pond is built, put some mud at the bottom, enclose the surroundings with an escape-prevention net, and then sprinkle some quicklime into the mud. If conditions permit, a few water hyacinth plants can be grown inside.
2. Stock fry
Go to a specialty market and buy some high-quality fry, soak them in salt water or bleaching powder water for 20 minutes, then scoop them out and put them into the pond. Generally, stocking 3-5 fry in the pond is sufficient.
3. Feed feeding
Snakehead fish are carnivorous fish. When young, they eat various small fish, small shrimp, larvae, and so on, and adult fish eat loach, crucian carp, common carp, sand loach, and so on, so when feeding, try to choose suitable food according to the size of the fish. When feeding, it should be done at fixed times, fixed places, and fixed amounts. Generally, feed at least twice a day, at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Later, the feed can be increased according to the fish's growth.
4. Later-stage farming techniques
(1) Patrol the pond frequently: During the farming period, frequently observe the feeding and activity of the snakehead fish, and promptly deal with fish that show abnormal conditions.
(2) Ensure sufficient oxygen content: During the growth period of snakehead fish, a large amount of phytoplankton will grow, which easily reduces the oxygen content in the pond, so the water surface should be sterilized in time, and an aeration pump should be placed in the pond to increase oxygen.
(3) Prevent diseases: During the growth period of snakehead fish, diseases such as trichodiniasis, myxosporidiosis, hemorrhagic septicemia, and skin rot disease may occur, so prevention and control measures should be taken in advance.
