How to Keep Blacktip Sharks? A Detailed Guide to Breeding Methods
The blacktip shark, also known as the black wing shark, is a species of tropical shark. Because of its small size and ease of keeping, many people like to buy a few as ornamental fish. So how do you keep a blacktip shark?
1. Water quality requirements
The blacktip shark has low demands for water quality. Generally, a water temperature of 22-24 degrees and a pH of 8.1-8.4 is sufficient. During keeping, the water generally needs to be changed twice a month, and the fish tank cleaned. When changing the water, the amount changed should not exceed 1/3 of the total volume. At the same time, water quality indicators should be tested frequently to ensure the stability of the water quality and to provide the fish with a safe and comfortable living environment.
2. Fish tank selection
The blacktip shark has a small body, but compared with other ornamental fish, its size is still somewhat large, so when choosing a fish tank, try to choose a larger one, and set up a good water circulation system and filtration system. Generally, an aquarium 1.5 m long and 1 m wide is best, because later on the blacktip shark will grow to about 70 cm. If the aquarium is too small, it will cause spinal deformities.
3. Feeding requirements
The blacktip shark is a carnivorous fish. It can be fed some invertebrates or artificial feed, and artificial feed is more readily accepted. Generally, when it is first introduced into the tank, it can be fed some chopped squid. After it has adapted to the aquarium, feed it squid, small shrimp, scallops and marine fish.
4. Keeping methods
The blacktip shark can be kept together with ferocious fish, such as large pufferfish, large angelfish, sea bass, etc. But when keeping it with triggerfish, be careful, as it is said that triggerfish will attack sharks and bite their fins.
5. Breeding methods
Blacktip sharks generally mate in early summer, and the gestation period lasts one year. From 1 to 15 years of age is their stage of body growth, and their size will continue to grow with age. At birth, their body length is only 0.6 m. By the time they grow into adult blacktip sharks, males can reach 1.75 m in length, while females reach an astonishing 2 m, making them truly deserving of the title of ocean overlords.
