How to Keep a Pet Crocodile? Care Methods and Precautions
As everyone knows, the crocodile is a rather ferocious animal that generally lives in the wild, but nowadays some people keep crocodiles as pets, so how do you keep a pet crocodile?
1. Basic Introduction to Crocodiles
Crocodiles are carnivorous, egg-laying, vertebrate reptiles. They are the most ancient reptiles that lived at the same time as the dinosaurs more than 200 million years ago, and are also one of the most primitive animals still surviving today. Thanks to their strong vitality, crocodiles have survived and reproduced, becoming one of the oldest living fossils on Earth.
Crocodiles usually like to inhabit the beaches of lakes and swamps, or the damp areas among the tangled grass and weeds in hilly mountain streams.
The main species include the Chinese alligator, the Siamese crocodile, the Nile crocodile, the Mississippi alligator, and the caiman.
2. How Do You Keep a Pet Crocodile?
The ideal size for a crocodile enclosure is 1.5 times the crocodile's body length, and during keeping you must pay attention to keeping the water clean. Because crocodiles are carnivorous animals, you can feed them the meat of various shellfish, poultry and aquatic turtles. When feeding, be careful to wear gloves so as not to be bitten by the crocodile. After keeping it for a period of time, you can begin training the crocodile.
The enclosure for keeping a crocodile must also have complete equipment:
1. Tank lid: a crocodile can swing its tail and jump out a distance three times its own length, so do not underestimate a crocodile's jumping ability;
2. Heating rod: aquarium shops sell them, and it can raise the temperature, but you need to be careful that it does not get smashed by the crocodile;
3. Filter: filters the water quality, essential;
4. Basking platform: for the crocodile to breathe or rest on; a turtle basking platform will do, and it is best to use a large stone;
5. UVB lamp: helps the crocodile absorb vitamin D3; if it can sunbathe for half an hour every day, this is not needed;
6. Thermometer: to measure the temperature.
