Pythons are distributed in many Asian countries and are also known as king snakes, southern snakes, and burrowing-headed snakes. The python is an omnivorous reptile that can swallow very large prey, which is quite terrifying. Because python skin and other parts have high commercial value and can be processed into many leather products, many people hunt and kill them, causing wild python resources to become increasingly scarce. So is the python a protected animal? What are its natural enemies?

I. Is the python a protected animal?

The python is a national first-class protected animal in our country and is also a CITES Appendix I protected animal under the Washington Convention. On the "World Conservation Union" (IUCN) list, it is a vulnerable species.

Recently, in a relevant case, a criminal suspect who captured a wild python stated that he did not know the python was a nationally protected animal, and that it was not a criminal act. So, is that really the case? Prosecutors stated that not knowing does not mean you have not committed a crime, nor can it constitute a legal defense, because precious wild animals are owned by the state and are part of public property, serving the public interest. Citizens have the responsibility to protect wild animal and plant resources, and the state cracks down hard on acts that harm wild animal and plant resources, and will not treat people differently based on whether they knew or did not know. Therefore, everyone should take this seriously. Do not knowingly break the law, and do not commit ignorant acts either.

II. What are the natural enemies of the python?

The python is a relatively large non-venomous snake species, and under normal circumstances it does not bite people. After eating, they become less mobile. Pythons are at the top of the food chain, but they also have things they fear, such as certain special smells and a type of plant. In some areas, when encountering a python, if you throw kudzu vine or grass bitterweed at it, the python immediately dares not crawl. Pythons also dislike the smell of sweat. If you encounter a python attack, you can throw strongly scented, relatively dirty clothes at it, and they will give up the chase.

Among python types, there are also some smaller species, and they are very afraid of an animal called the honey badger. When a honey badger sees prey it likes, it immediately chases after it. Even if the python climbs up a tree to avoid it, it will seize every opportunity to grab the python's tail so that it cannot move. Of course, pythons are not so easily caught, because their constricting ability is very strong. However, honey badgers are also very agile and generally will not easily be constricted by pythons.

When the python and the honey badger fight until they have no strength left, the honey badger will bite hard into the python's vital spot, killing it in one move.

In summary, the python is indeed a precious protected animal in our country, and everyone should not hunt and kill it at will, otherwise they will face severe punishment.
