How to Keep Goldfish in Winter: Care Methods and Precautions
Goldfish are a relatively common type of ornamental fish, but to keep them well, you need to master the relevant techniques, especially in winter, when you must control the water temperature well and feed them properly. So how do you keep goldfish in winter?
1. Requirements for the fish tank and water quality
Before buying the fish tank, first place tap water in the sun for 1-2 days to let the chlorine in it dissipate, then pour the water into the tank, and then put in the fish. Generally, when October arrives, the water temperature should be kept above 4 degrees; if it is below 4 degrees, they will enter a hibernation state. At the same time, change the water every 15-20 days, changing only 1/4-1/3 of the water each time. When December arrives, changing the water once a month is enough.
2. Feeding requirements
In winter, goldfish become less active and their appetite drops greatly. Generally, feed them once every 7-10 days. Do not feed too much, to avoid the fish overeating and dying or polluting the water quality. When feeding, do not let oil or oily food fall into the fish tank; oil can easily cause goldfish in the tank to die.
3. Wash the fish tank frequently
After keeping them for a period of time, generally wash the fish tank once a week. When cleaning, change the water at noon or when the temperature is relatively high, and it is best if the water has also been sunned. Do not wash the fish tank too clean when cleaning it; always keeping it clear and changing the water frequently is actually not good for goldfish.
4. Prevent disease
In winter, goldfish mainly suffer from fungal diseases, bacterial diseases, or discomfort caused by improper care (such as unaged water, frequent water changes, catching a cold, and so on). The main symptoms are white fuzz, white spots, blood streaks, head rot, increased secretions, and poor fish condition. In this situation, you can put the goldfish in lightly salted water to soak for about 10 minutes, then return them to the fish tank, and try not to feed them during this period.
