How to grow wax begonia? Growing methods and precautions
Wax begonia, also called four-season begonia (wax begonia, Begonia cucullata), is a very common ornamental flower. So how do you grow wax begonia? Let's take a look!
1. How to grow wax begonia
1. Potting soil
When choosing soil, wax begonia has low soil requirements; generally, the leaf mold and wood shavings plus soil needed for most flowers can be mixed together, and some river sand can also be added appropriately to enhance the soil's air permeability. Wax begonia likes a cool and ventilated growing environment, and is not suitable for direct strong light at high temperatures.
2. Sunlight and temperature
During the hot midsummer season, be sure to avoid direct strong light on four-season begonia, as this will sunburn it. Begonia flowers like sunlight and are suitable for growing in a sunny environment; in a shady place they will grow poorly. Special attention should be paid to potted plants grown at home: during their growing period, place them in a well-lit spot for care. Because they are cold-tolerant, in winter, even at minus 15 degrees, begonia flowers can still grow well without frost damage, and can be placed outdoors to overwinter. However, when it is unusually cold, protective measures should be taken.
3. Watering method
Four-season begonia likes warm and moist conditions, so during the growing period, watering should be based on the plant's growth and changes in temperature. Water less during the germination period and keep the potting soil slightly dry; if it is too wet, it will cause root rot. During the growing period, water once every two days, and frequently spray water around the plant to increase air humidity. In addition, note that when watering, do not pour from the leaves or the top of the stems; water along the edge of the flowerpot, otherwise the stems and leaves are prone to water accumulation and rot.
4. Fertilization management
During the growth period of four-season begonia, fertilizer should be applied according to the plant's leaf color and leaf growth conditions. Do not apply too much fertilizer, otherwise it will cause excessive leaf growth and affect flowering. Before flowering, apply an appropriate amount of phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer to improve flowering quality.
5. Pest and disease control
During hot and dry periods, four-season begonia is prone to root rot and stem rot. When discovered in the early stage, watering should be controlled promptly, and carbendazim should be sprayed for control. The effect can be seen after continuous use for a period of time.
