Cow manure is a commonly used farmyard manure, and many cattle farmers compost cow manure before using it as fertilizer. Below is an introduction to the simplest cow manure composting method.

1. Cow manure composting methods

1. Dry cow manure: Because dry cow manure lacks moisture and cannot ferment, you must add enough water, then pile it into a large heap, then ferment it, and cover it with sealed plastic sheeting on top; this way fermentation will be faster.

2. Fresh cow manure: If it is fresh cow manure, various auxiliary materials also need to be added during fermentation to absorb the moisture in the fresh cow manure. Too much moisture easily leads to poor aeration, and microorganisms cannot carry out fermentation. The auxiliary materials can be chosen from many kinds; the purpose is simply to absorb part of the moisture in the fresh cow manure. The auxiliary materials are generally chosen as: sawdust, straw, plant ash charcoal, and so on.

2. Precautions

1. Cow manure must be fermented and composted before it can be used on crops; otherwise, certain pathogenic microorganisms in the cow manure will burn the crop roots. Drying and sun-drying are both acceptable, but after sun-drying, part of the nutrients in the cow manure will be lost. Drying cow manure with a dryer can achieve the drying purpose and can also achieve the deodorizing purpose. It can also reduce manual labor intensity, and so on.

2. After drying, the moisture content should be controlled at about 25% in winter and about 15% in summer, to prevent subsequent processes from being unable to be completed. Some dryers cannot control the moisture content of dried cow manure, causing cow manure granular organic fertilizer to continue fermenting after being left to stand.

3. In summer and autumn, the film should be uncovered once in the morning and once in the evening for ventilation (1 to 2 hours). When the weather is clear, the film can be uncovered in the evening of the previous day and covered again the next morning. After 4 to 6 days of piling and composting, the pile temperature can rise to 60 to 70°C. After 10 days of piling and composting, the pile can be turned once, and after 20 days of piling and composting it will be thoroughly composted, the nutrient content will increase, and harmful insects will be eliminated.

4. For the choice of fermentation bacteria, be sure to choose those with high bacterial activity, preferably native bacteria. This way fermentation is stable and less likely to fail.

In addition to cow manure, the feces of humans, livestock, poultry, and so on can all be composted and then used.
