The Dieffenbachia plant has splendid leaf colors and stays green all year round, making it an excellent indoor foliage plant. However, the sap of this plant is toxic, so be sure not to let it touch your skin, and even more importantly, never ingest it. Below we introduce the cultivation methods and precautions for Dieffenbachia!

1. Cultivation methods for Dieffenbachia

1. Soil

It prefers loose, fertile soil; ideally a sandy loam and humus soil that is loose, fertile, slightly acidic, well-draining, and yet has fairly strong water retention and fertilizer-holding capacity. It can be prepared by mixing 60% leaf mold, 30% sand, and 10% barnyard manure.

2. Light

It prefers semi-shade; ideally it should receive 2-3 hours of diffused sunlight each day, and direct strong light should be avoided, otherwise the leaves will stand upright, become smaller and yellow, or develop large scorched and whitened areas. In spring and autumn, it is best to let it receive more sunlight in the morning and evening. If it must be placed in a relatively dark corner for a long time for special reasons, the stems and leaves will become leggy and weak, and the leaf color will gradually fade; this can be solved by strengthening artificial lighting or rotating it between indoor and outdoor positions.

3. Temperature

It prefers warmth, with an optimum growing temperature of 20-30°C, and it is sensitive to cold; in winter it should also be kept at 12-16°C, with watering controlled and fertilizing stopped. Below 12°C it easily sheds leaves, and if the temperature is too low it is prone to cold damage. It prefers moisture; from April to September it grows vigorously, so it should be watered thoroughly, but the potting soil must not remain excessively wet for a long time, otherwise it will inevitably lead to yellow leaves and root rot. In hot summer, water and mist the soil surface around the flower pot multiple times to increase air humidity.

4. Fertilizer and water

It prefers fertilizer and generally grows stout and rapid, requiring more fertilizer. During the growing season, apply soybean cake liquid fertilizer once every half month; during the wintering period, apply phosphate fertilizer once each at Minor Cold and Major Cold, and do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer. Stick to light fertilizer applied frequently. During cultivation, also use a sponge dipped in warm water to gently wipe the leaf surface once every ten days, to prevent the leaf stomata from being blocked by oil stains and smoke dust. At the same time, properly prune some old leaves every 1-2 months, which can make new leaves grow quickly and vigorously.

2. Precautions for cultivating Dieffenbachia

1. Pay attention to ventilation

It prefers ventilation; the large leaves of this plant require fresh, circulating air, and pollution must be avoided. However, when ventilating, also avoid drafty wind, strong wind, and dry cold wind, so as not to damage the leaves.

2. Pest and disease control

Diseases: Common diseases include bacterial leaf spot, brown spot, anthracnose, gray blight, rot, stem rot, viral disease, ring spot, gray mold, and other damage. Leaf spot. Control method: both in the early and late stages of onset, spray with 0.5%-1% Bordeaux mixture or 50% carbendazim 800-fold solution, once a week, for 3-4 consecutive times.
