The yellow pond turtle is a precious animal resource, and every part of it is valuable; it holds important significance and economic value in medicine, ornamental appreciation, craft production, food, and modern scientific research. At present, the Chinese yellow pond turtle can already be bred in captivity, so how many times a day should juvenile Chinese yellow pond turtles be fed?

1. How many times a day should juvenile Chinese yellow pond turtles be fed?

Juvenile Chinese yellow pond turtles are fed twice a day, generally in the morning and in the evening. They can be fed fish and shrimp, shellfish, snails, fruit peel, tender grass, corn, pork, poultry offal, and so on; the amount fed each time should be such that a small amount is left over.

2. How are Chinese yellow pond turtles kept?

1. Container

The container for keeping a Chinese yellow pond turtle can be a fish tank, and it should be square; there must be water in the tank, and the water must not be too deep, just enough to cover the turtle's shell; a stone should be placed in the tank, and the stone should be fairly large so the turtle can bask in the sun.

2. Water quality

The water for keeping a Chinese yellow pond turtle should be of good quality. If it is a hatchling, the water can be changed once a day; once it grows a little, there is no need to be so diligent. In summer, it is recommended to change the water once every 2-3 days, and in winter once a week. The amount of water changed should be one half, and the temperature difference between the new water and the old water should not be too great.

3. Water temperature

The water temperature for keeping a Chinese yellow pond turtle should be suitable. The ideal water temperature is 20-30 degrees; below 15 degrees it will gradually enter hibernation, and below 10 degrees it will enter hibernation. The hibernation period is generally from November in winter to March of the following year. During hibernation, the turtle can be placed in a plastic box with torn facial tissues or chopped straw, sprayed to keep moist, and the young turtle placed inside.

4. Food

The feeding method for hatchlings has already been mentioned above. If it is a somewhat older turtle, feed once a day; if it is an adult turtle, feed once every other day. In April, May, and October, feeding should be done around midday; from June to September, feeding should be done at 8-9 in the morning or at 6 in the evening.

5. Cleaning

Each time you feed, clean the feeding platform, and remove leftover food promptly; change the water frequently in normal times, scrub the tank body with salt when changing the water, and add a small amount of salt after changing the water; also frequently use a toothbrush to gently wipe the turtle's shell and plastron to clean the turtle's body.

Although the Chinese yellow pond turtle can be bred in captivity, you must apply to the local fisheries administrative department (such as the fisheries bureau) for a “license for domesticating and breeding aquatic wildlife” or form a joint operation with a large turtle farm; otherwise it is illegal operation.
