Most people probably do not encounter bullfrogs very often in daily life, especially those who do not know much about this subject. So, is the bullfrog a protected animal? Let's take a look!

1. Is the bullfrog a protected animal?

The bullfrog is not a protected animal. In 1959, the bullfrog was introduced into China from Cuba, and around the 1990s it began to be widely promoted for farming in China. In recent years, the bullfrog has become one of the important specialty aquatic products in China's aquaculture.

2. How to carry out overwintering management for bullfrogs

1. Cave overwintering:

To accommodate the bullfrog's habit of digging holes and lying dormant, you can loosen the soil around the frog pond and, in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot, dig several caves 15cm in diameter and 1m deep at the water level line, keeping them moist so that the bullfrogs can enter the caves to hibernate.

2. Diving overwintering

The frog pond should maintain a water depth of 1-1.2m, the water surface should not be allowed to freeze, and 6-9cm of silt should be left at the bottom of the pond so that the bullfrogs can dive and lie dormant in the silt to overwinter. When there is continuous cold, freezing weather, the ice on the water surface should be broken to prevent the water body from freezing and causing the coagulation of bullfrog body fluids and blood.

3. Straw curtain overwintering

Build an earth wall on the north side of the frog pond, about 70cm high, and build triangular earth walls on the east and west ends that are high in the north and low in the south. At about 40cm above the water surface, set up a frame with wood and bamboo, cover it with straw curtains (overlapping repeatedly), and fit the surroundings tightly against the pond edge to keep the water temperature at around 10°C.

4. Indoor overwintering

Indoors, on the sunny side, build a brick pond about 50cm high, spread about 30cm of loose soil inside the pond, then place a water basin in the pond with its rim level with the soil so that the soil remains moist for a long time. Cover the pond opening with plastic film to seal it, and you can also hang a 40W light bulb inside the pond to raise the temperature, ensuring the bullfrogs overwinter safely.
