Introduction to the badger
1. Species classification
The badger, also called the dog badger or Eurasian badger, is a mammal distributed across most of Europe and Asia, belonging to the order Carnivora, family Mustelidae. The badger is placed separately in the genus Meles. There are 5 subspecies in total. Usually the badger's fur color is gray, the lower abdomen is black, and the face has black-and-white alternating stripes. The ear tips are white.
2. Food
The badger mainly eats earthworms, but also eats insects, beetles, and small mammals. The badger and the American badger both belong to the family Mustelidae, but they are not the same species, and they differ considerably in distribution, diet, and habits.
3. Reproduction
Badgers reach sexual maturity at 1 to 2 years of age, the gestation period is about 230 days, and each litter produces 3 to 4 cubs. Young badgers open their eyes at about 35 days of age. After 5 to 6 months of growth and development, the young badgers have basically grown up by late autumn and early winter.
4. Population
Badgers are divided into dog badgers, hog badgers, wolverines, honey badgers, and ferret badgers.
