The common snapping turtle is the most ancient surviving reptile, one of the larger freshwater turtles in the world, and is known as the king of freshwater animals, yet some people still like to breed this turtle artificially. How should the common snapping turtle be raised so it can grow up healthily?

1. Temperature

The common snapping turtle has a very strong ability to adapt to its environment. They can still survive normally when the water temperature is 2-38 degrees, and the most suitable living temperature for the growth of the common snapping turtle is 28-30 degrees Celsius. Above 1 degrees C they can overwinter normally, below 12 degrees C they enter a state of shallow hibernation, at 6 degrees C they enter deep hibernation, at 15 degrees C~17 degrees C their activity level decreases, and above 18 degrees C they can feed normally.

2. Feeding

The common snapping turtle is an omnivorous animal. It will eat plants, but it prefers meaty foods, such as fry, small shrimp, internal organs, pork, beef, and so on. Common snapping turtles growing in the wild will also prey on animals such as birds or snakes. In artificial breeding, special turtle food can be used for feeding. When feeding the common snapping turtle, do not feed too much, otherwise it may be overfed to death.

3. Sunlight

When raising common snapping turtles, let them bask in the sun at least once a week. The time can be chosen before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. At these times the sunlight is softer, not as harsh as at noon, and very suitable for basking in the sun.

4. Changing the Water

In order to keep the water clean and unpolluted, the water for the common snapping turtle needs to be changed. You can change the water once every three days. If there is a filtration system, it is also fine not to change the water for a long time. If tap water is used for raising them, it needs to be left in the sun for two to three days before use. Note: when changing the water, do not change it all at once; leave 1/3 of the original water.

The common snapping turtle is divided into two major types, commonly known as the big snapping turtle and the small snapping turtle. They have four subspecies, namely North American, Florida, South American, and Central American. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as a species of Least Concern (LC). Later, because of its high ornamental value and strong adaptability, it became deeply favored by domestic turtle enthusiasts.
