How to keep leftover crabs alive for a few more days?
Buying crabs yourself and cooking them is much cheaper, especially when crabs are cheap, so you buy a few more. Sometimes you buy too many and plan to keep them for a few days before eating. So, how do you keep leftover crabs?
1. Container
You can keep crabs in a fairly deep basin. If there are too many crabs for one basin, you can keep them separately. Do not let the crabs inside be too crowded, and do not let them pile up layer upon layer. If you are worried the crabs will escape, you can cover the basin with a layer of gauze.
2. Adding water
You can use tap water from home. First let the water sit for a few hours to soften, then pour it into the basin. If they are river crabs, keeping them in clean water is enough; if they are sea crabs, add some salt to the water. The water depth should not submerge the crabs, but it should cover the crabs' shells so that their heads can show when they stand up, otherwise they will have trouble breathing.
3. Placement
Put the basin in a cool, ventilated place indoors. Do not put it in sunlight, do not cover it, and change the water once a day with clean water. Keeping crabs this way temporarily is simple and practical. When the temperature is not too high, they can even be kept for more than 5 days, but this does not fatten them up.
4. Feeding
If you plan to eat them after keeping them for one or two days, there is no need to feed them. If you want to keep them longer and keep the crabs from getting thin, you can feed them some food, such as eggs, rice, black sesame seeds, small dried shrimp, small fish, and so on.
