Mullet, also known as snakehead mullet, with common names green-headed fry (young fish), qimu fry (adult fish), xinyu, Zhengyu, and rough-scaled fish, is produced even in China's severe cold regions, so is it a freshwater fish or a saltwater fish?

1. Is mullet a freshwater fish or a saltwater fish?

Mullet is a saltwater fish, but it can live in freshwater, brackish water and salt water. It likes to inhabit coastal nearshore areas, bays and river estuaries. It is one of the most important economic fish species in brackish-water aquaculture along the southern coast of China, and also one of the most widely distributed important economic fish species in the world.

2. What should be paid attention to in mullet farming?

1. Facility configuration

Mullet swims quickly and is good at jumping. At the water inlet and outlet, high enclosures should be set up, made of polyethylene netting, 1.6 m high, with 0.4 m below the mud, fixed with bamboo poles to prevent mullet from escaping.

2. Fry stocking

Choose natural fry from coastal areas, robust and lively, with a size of more than 4 cm. After about one week of desalination, they are put into freshwater ponds to improve the survival rate, with 250-300 fish stocked per mu.

3. Feed feeding

Mullet has a short food chain and mainly feeds on humus, deposited organic debris, epiphytic algae and small animals. In freshwater ponds, it can fully feed on plankton in the water and leftover bait of other aquatic animals, such as pelleted feed left by grass carp, improving water quality and playing the role of a “scavenger”.

4. Disease prevention and control

The more common diseases of mullet are parasitic diseases and water mold. It is necessary to regularly disinfect the water body once a month with bleaching powder, quicklime, or junduxiao and baiduke, and timely add and change new water to improve the water environment, keep the water quality fresh, and prevent diseases.

When farming mullet, river crabs and grass carp can be mixed in, which can improve economic benefits.
