Is the mud crab a sea crab? A detailed explanation of the mud crab's species classification
The mud crab is relatively common in coastal areas, and many friends often cannot tell it apart because its appearance is the same as that of the Chinese mitten crab. So is the mud crab a sea crab? Let's take a look together!
1. Is the mud crab a sea crab?
The mud crab is a sea crab. The scientific name of the mud crab is Scylla serrata (green mud crab), and it mainly lives in the mud and sand bottoms of shallow coastal waters and estuaries. It is known as the “ginseng of the sea” and is usually easy to buy in coastal areas.
2. Introduction to farming facilities
1. The farming site should preferably be chosen in a cove or bay sheltered from wind and waves, or in the upper and high-tide zones with support such as embankments and dams, and natural water intake should occur for more than 10 days each month. The area of the farming flat should preferably not exceed 20 mu. The flat dam should be built with mud or stone, with a dam width of more than 0.5 m and a height of 0.6-1 m, so that spring tides can flow freely in and out of the farming flat over the flat dam, and water should often be stored (including the ring ditch inside the flat) to more than 1.5 m.
2. Surround the flat dam with a net enclosure. The netting should be polyethylene line of 9 strands or more, with a mesh size of 1-2 cm, and the height of the net enclosure should exceed the local historical highest tide level by 0.5-1 m. A 40 cm wide overhanging net should be added at the upper end of the net enclosure to prevent mud crabs from climbing over the net and escaping. The overhanging net should be folded inward toward the flat and form an angle of 45°-60° with the net enclosure.
3. The lower end of the net enclosure should be buried in the bottom of the flat dam. To prevent rats and other animals from biting the net, a double-layer structure can be used at the base of the net enclosure. The bamboo stakes supporting the net enclosure should be moso bamboo with a diameter of more than 10 cm, with spacing of no more than 2 m. Together with the lower end of the net enclosure, they should be inserted from the dam into below the base of the flat dam, and the stakes should be reinforced with ropes tied on both the inside and outside.
4. According to the size of the farming flat area, set up inlet and outlet sluice gates, but net enclosures should be built correspondingly both inside and outside the gates. Inside the flat, dig a ring ditch or central ditch with a depth of more than 0.8 m, and the ditch area should account for more than 10% of the farming flat area. Place hidden objects such as tile shards on the flat surface for mud crabs to inhabit.
