Snails can be said to be a very large group, with more than 40,000 species, belonging to the mollusks among the invertebrates. So, how do snails reproduce?

1. How Do Snails Reproduce

Snails reproduce unisexually. Of course, different species have different reproductive methods; some are hermaphroditic, and some are unisexual, but no matter which type, even hermaphroditic ones need cross-fertilization with another individual to complete reproduction. After mating is complete, the fertilized eggs develop inside the body, and when the time is right the snail expels them from its body. At the same time, an outer membrane protects the fertilized eggs until the young snails break out of the shell.

2. Common Types of Edible Snails

Several dozen species of edible snails have been discovered so far, among which the following are the main common ones.

1. Red snails: The red snail is a very popular edible sea snail on the restaurant market, with abundant, plump meat. It is further subdivided into the veined rapa whelk, the angular whelk, the sea snail, the glass snail, the false hunting snail, and others, and it is basically found in all the major sea areas of China.

2. Spotted snails: Spotted snails are also called east wind snails and south wind snails, because they are generally distributed only in the sea areas of the East China Sea and the South China Sea, and their meat is relatively elastic and chewy.

3. Flat moon snails: These include the fragrant snail, the navel snail, the sea navel, the cockle tiger, and others. This type of snail is rather sandy and sticky, and April and May each year are the best season to eat flat moon snails.

4. Turret snails: Turret snails are easy to recognize, with a slender, long shape. It is generally difficult to extract the whole snail meat by “picking”, so “spicy stir-frying” and then sucking the meat out after breaking off the tail is the best way to eat turret snails.

5. Rainbow snails: Rainbow snails have relatively little meat, but the meat is very fresh and has a nice texture. Boil a pot of them, pick the meat out with a toothpick and dip it in sauce to eat, and it could not be better.

6. Bitter snails: Many people do not like to eat this type of snail, because the flavor is slightly bitter, but those who love it love this peculiar taste.

7. Conch: This type of snail is relatively expensive, and its meat is relatively plump and delicious. It is usually eaten in coastal areas as a hot pot.

8. Chicken-eye snails: They look rather like chicken eyes, but are only the size of a coin.

9. European whelk: China does not have this type of snail; its place of origin is mostly in the Western Europe region. Whelk in soy sauce braise is a very famous dish.

10. Sesame snails: These are relatively common in the southern region of China, and the price is relatively cheap.

11. River snails: River snails are a common freshwater snail, and summer and autumn are generally the high-yield season for river snails.
