How Do Giraffes Get Through Winter? A Detailed Guide to Winter Rearing and Warmth-Keeping Methods

The giraffe is the tallest land animal alive today, reaching 6-8 m from head to feet when standing; because its neck is so long, some people say that everything above its legs is neck. So, how do giraffes get through winter?

1. How do giraffes get through winter?

Giraffes do not need to worry about getting through winter. It is an animal that lives in Africa, with a total of 9 subspecies, all inhabiting Africa's tropical and subtropical savannas, scrubland, open acacia woodlands, arid and open savanna zones, and semi-desert zones with sparse trees. These places have relatively high temperatures and basically no winter, so giraffes living there do not need to consider how to get through winter.

2. Are giraffes mute?

Giraffes are not mute. Not only do they have vocal cords, they can also call out; it is just that their vocal cords are very special and not well suited to making sounds. Vocalizing requires the combined help of the lungs, chest cavity and diaphragm, but because the giraffe's neck is simply too long and the distance between it and these organs is too great, calling is very laborious, so they rarely call. However, they are able to make a “moo, moo, moo” sound like a calf.

3. How long do giraffes sleep each day?

A giraffe generally sleeps only two hours a night, and most of the time it sleeps standing up. Of course, they also sleep lying down, but sleeping lying down is very dangerous, so more often they sleep standing up. Because the neck is too long, when sleeping they often rest their head against a tree branch to avoid overtiring the neck.
