How Do Red Swordtail Fish Breed? Detailed Explanation of Methods and Precautions
The red swordtail fish, also known as the red sword and swordfish, belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes and is a freshwater ornamental fish developed through artificial breeding. It is loved by people for its fiery red color all over its body. So, how do red swordtail fish breed?
1. How Do Red Swordtail Fish Breed
Red swordtail fish reproduce through viviparity. Adults generally reach sexual maturity at 7 months of age, after which they can mate and give birth to fry. Male and female red swordtail fish are very easy to distinguish. The male fish has an elongated body, bright red body color, and its caudal fin forms a rod-shaped mating organ. The female fish has a short and plump body shape, with a flat anal fin. A female fish can produce 30-200 fry at one time.
2. Rearing Methods
1. When keeping red swordtail fish, the water temperature is best controlled at around 25°C-28°C (buy a thermometer specially designed for fish keeping and place it in the fish tank to measure the water temperature).
2. Prepare a fish tank. The size depends on how many fish there are. Make it as large as possible so the fish have more space to move around.
3. When there is a lack of oxygen, the fish will gather and move around near the water surface. At this time, you can turn on an oxygen pump to supply oxygen. If there is no oxygen pump, change some of the water for the fish. Find a siphon tube and use it to suck away the dirt at the bottom of the tank, then change 1/3 or 1/2 of the water. Changing too much water will make the fish uncomfortable. Clear water does not mean there is oxygen in the water. When siphoning or adding water, try not to touch the fish, so as not to injure the fish's fins.
