How Do Praying Mantises Get Through Winter? Uncovering Their Winter Survival Strategy

Praying mantises are relatively common in daily life, but they are mostly seen in hotter weather. So do you know how praying mantises get through winter? Let's take a look!

1. How praying mantises get through winter

Praying mantises find it very hard to survive the winter. A praying mantis lives only about 6-8 months, and adults cannot get through the winter, so they can only leave behind eggs to overwinter; when spring comes the following year, these eggs develop into young praying mantises.

2. An introduction to praying mantis mimicry behavior

1. Mimicking flowers

In the tropics there is a kind of praying mantis whose front legs have evolved to look like petals and whose body color has become purple-white; it hides among foliage.

2. Mimicking leaves

Other praying mantises grow leaf-like flaps and protrusions on their thorax, abdomen, tibiae and tarsi, mimicking leaves, twigs and tree scars to confuse small insects.

3. Mimicking water droplets

In tropical desert regions there is a kind of praying mantis with a green body and a flat protrusion on its head that is smooth and shiny; when it crouches in the grass, in the sunlight the protrusion on its head looks like a glistening dewdrop, luring small insects from arid areas to come for water, whereupon they are caught.
