Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish) are a common ornamental fish in daily life and are very popular on the market. Many people like to keep a few at home, so how do betta fish breed?

1. How do betta fish breed?

First set up the betta breeding environment, then select a few high-quality betta fish and keep the females and males separate. During this period, the male betta will keep displaying itself and looking for a suitable place to build a nest. At this point, put the female into the container where the male has built its nest. Some fighting may occur during this time. When the female betta is on the verge of death, they will enter the breeding stage. The male betta will wrap its body around the female and squeeze her abdomen to release the eggs.

2. How do you keep betta fish?

1. Water quality requirements

Betta fish are not very strict about water quality among ornamental fish. They like to live in weakly acidic soft water at 22-24°C and can tolerate temperature changes, but the temperature must not be lower than 18°C. The water's pH and GH must not be too high. Some people also keep betta fish in Nongfu Spring water with fairly good results. Betta fish can generally grow to about 5-6 cm, with the longest reaching 10 cm, so the aquarium equipment must not be too small.

2. Rearing environment

Betta fish are famous for being aggressive, so it is best not to keep betta fish together, especially males. When two males meet, there will inevitably be a duel to determine who is superior. As for females, they are not so intense. If you want to keep several together, it is best to keep one female and one male together. Of course, the best recommendation is to keep them separately. When keeping betta fish, the environment does not have to be too monotonous. You can place some aquatic plants in the water to give the betta places to hide, relieve tension, and reduce the pressure brought by the surrounding environment. Plants with low CO2 requirements such as hornwort and black algae are fine. You can also put a mirror in the tank each day or let them face off for 15-20 minutes to maintain their fighting nature.

3. Feeding requirements

Betta fish have a fighting nature, yet they are not suitable for being kept in groups, but they still need to be encouraged to move and maintain their fighting nature. The best way is during feeding. Live foods that betta fish like to eat include water fleas, bloodworms, nematodes, mosquitoes, and so on. When feeding, you can put the live food in and let the betta chase and hunt it, experiencing the joy of predation and maintaining its fighting nature. Usually, you should also feed matching feed to balance nutrition.

4. Maintaining water quality

Because keeping betta fish does not require filtration and other equipment, you need to clean up the betta's waste and leftover food every day to keep the water clean. You can use a small tube to siphon out the waste at the bottom of the tank. About every week, changing 1/3 or 1/4 of the water is fine, but the temperature difference during water changes must not be too large, and the water used should be aged water.
