How Do Crabs Overwinter? A Detailed Guide to Winter Farming Management
Crabs are a common type of seafood in daily life, with many varieties and high nutritional value, and are very popular among people. Currently, they are farmed in most regions, so how do crabs overwinter?
1. How do crabs overwinter?
Before crabs overwinter, the silt in the pond should be cleaned out promptly, and disinfection work should be done well. The water temperature should be kept above 10 degrees as much as possible; if it falls below 10 degrees, reduce the feeding amount by 3-5%. Inspect 1-2 times a day, and take anti-escape measures in advance.
2. How do you raise crabs so they do not die?
1. Rearing environment
To raise crabs at home, you can choose a relatively spacious pond with a certain depth that can prevent the crabs from escaping. It can be a cement pond or a larger plastic basin.
In the crab-rearing pond, spread a layer of about 10 cm of silt and about 5 cm of river sand. You can get some sand from a riverbank or lakeside, or buy it online.
If you plan to raise crabs at home for a long time, you can also plant some easy-to-survive aquatic plants in the pond, such as Hydrilla verticillata, Vallisneria, and Elodea, so that they can both purify the rearing water and serve as bait for the crabs to eat.
The specific number of aquatic plants to plant depends on the size of the rearing site and the number of crabs.
2. Crab size
It is recommended that crabs raised in the same pond should not differ too much in size, so as not to affect the survival rate of the crabs.
In addition, make sure the crabs being raised are themselves free of disease and injury.
3. Rearing management
(1) Bait
During the rearing process, you can feed animal-based bait such as bloodworms, dried shrimp, river snails, and mussel meat, supplemented with plant-based bait such as aquatic plants, pumpkin, and potato. Feed once in the morning and once in the evening, and the crabs will grow better.
(2) Changing water
On the issue of changing water, it is recommended to change the water once every 3 days. After changing the water, splash an appropriate amount of quicklime over it to sterilise and disinfect it in time.
