The white-eye is a small insectivorous bird with a body length of 90-122 mm. Its body shape and color closely resemble those of the leaf warbler, and its eye ring is made up of conspicuous short white downy feathers, forming a striking white eye ring. So, how do white-eyes get through winter?

1. How do white-eyes get through winter?

The white-eye is a summer migratory bird. In autumn it flies to warmer areas to spend the winter, and in the following spring it flies back to its original area. If it is a caged bird, take care to keep it warm and protected from the cold in winter. Hang the cage in a sunny, warm room, keep the room temperature between 15-20°C, and let it sunbathe often in a wind-sheltered, sunny spot. Give it a water bath once every 3-5 days, preferably in the early afternoon in a spot with direct sunlight or in a warm indoor area.

2. What do white-eyes eat?

The white-eye is a small insectivorous bird. It mainly feeds on insects among flowers, and also likes to eat nectar and sweet, soft fruit. In captive breeding, the staple food is powdered feed, the supplementary food is various fruits (apple, grape, cooked sweet potato, water chestnut, watermelon, cucumber), and live animal food (yellow mealworm, locust) is given as a supplement. When feeding, mixed powdered feed is the main food, along with fruits, green vegetables, insects, egg millet, and cooked sweet potato.

3. How do white-eyes take a water bath?

White-eyes love water baths. In summer, give one bath a day; in late autumn and early spring, give a water bath once every 2-4 days; in winter, once every 3-5 days. For a water bath, you can put the white-eye into a bathing cage and place the bathing cage in a shallow basin with water, with the water level just reaching the bird's lower abdominal feathers. You can also place a small, very shallow container inside the bathing cage for it to bathe in. You can put the base saucer of a plastic flower pot inside the bathing cage, filled with water just up to the bird's lower abdomen. Try to provide the bird with a warm, wind-free bathing environment to avoid catching a cold. After the water bath, immediately give it a sunbath so its feathers dry out and become fluffy.
