Sharks are very typical marine animals, and in the vast ocean sharks hold a very high position. So do you know how sharks reproduce? Let's take a look together!

1. How Do Sharks Reproduce?

Shark reproduction is mainly sexual reproduction. It takes place in the forms of oviparity, ovoviviparity, and false viviparity. Sharks fertilize internally, and male fish all have claspers, which are copulatory organs.

2. Introduction to Shark Reproductive Methods

1. Oviparous type

The egg cases are peculiar, and their size and shape vary with species. The largest is 30 cm long, 14 cm wide, and 9 cm high, making it the largest egg of living fish; the smallest egg is 63 mm long and 37 mm wide. In most species the egg case is rectangular, with elongated tendrils at the four corners used to entangle themselves around seaweed, stones, and other objects for incubation.

2. Ovoviviparous type

In most sharks the fertilized eggs develop into fetuses inside the mother's uterus, and finally the young fish are born. The number of fetuses produced varies, ranging from several dozen in some to 2-3 in others.

3. Viviparous type

The fetus has a close connection with the mother; the mother's uterine wall and the fetus's yolk sac join to form a yolk sac placenta, and the mother's nutrients and oxygen enter the fetus's body through the yolk sac placenta.
