A Detailed Guide to Breeding Methods and Techniques for Lake Malawi/Tanganyika/Victoria Cichlids
Three-lake cichlids are a type of ornamental fish, deeply loved by fish keepers for their rich colors and strong adaptability. Many people now like to keep one at home, so how do three-lake cichlids breed?
1. How do three-lake cichlids breed?
Three-lake cichlids have two breeding methods: substrate-spawning types and mouthbrooding types. In substrate-spawning types, the parent fish lay their eggs inside shells or spawning pots, and then both the male and female stay in place to guard the fertilized eggs until they fully hatch and the fry can move freely. In mouthbrooding types, the male leaves after fertilization is complete, and the female keeps the fertilized eggs in her mouth to avoid predators until the small fish can hunt for food independently.
2. How do you keep three-lake cichlids?
1. Water quality
If you want to know how to keep three-lake cichlids, we first need to understand the living environment of three-lake cichlids, that is, the water quality issue. Among the three lakes, the pH for Malawi cichlids and Victoria cichlids must be maintained at least above 7.5, and Tanganyika cichlids need it even higher, above 8, to grow and color up well. A GH between 6 and 15 is best, so in areas where tap water has a pH of 7, you need to appropriately raise the water value. There are specialized agents, but the most economical and practical method is still to add baking soda.
2. Fish tank
The fish tank for three-lake cichlids does not need to be too large; a width above 45 is fine. For Lake Malawi and Lake Victoria, a tank of about 1 m is about enough, while Lake Tanganyika is even smaller, 80 is sufficient. If you are keeping the smallest shell-dwellers, even a 60 tank will do, placed on a desk, and it is extraordinarily pleasant.
3. Filtration
Because the high hardness of a three-lake tank leads to the accumulation of waste such as ammonia, three-lake cichlids need a powerful filtration system. It is best to use an overhead filter with a high-power water pump, and it must be able to filter the water at least 6 times within one hour. Canister filters are not recommended as the main filtration method; they can be used as an auxiliary method and can be combined with any other filtration system. As for nitrifying bacteria, it is best to use some live bacteria produced by large manufacturers; they take effect quickly and work well, only they are somewhat expensive. Of course, if you are not in a hurry, slowly culturing them yourself is also a good choice.
To solve the problem of how to keep three-lake cichlids, just remembering these three points is enough, and your beloved three-lake cichlids will absolutely eat everything with gusto and be in excellent health. Of course, the knowledge of keeping three-lake cichlids goes far beyond these: aquascaping, lighting, mixed keeping,
