Shellfish are a common kind of mollusk, and many shellfish are edible aquatic products, so how do shellfish reproduce?

1. Basic introduction to shellfish

Shellfish belong to the phylum Mollusca and are mainly distributed in oceans, lakes and other waters. Common shellfish species are oysters, mussels, clams, cuttlefish, snails and so on.

Shellfish breathe through gills and lungs. Aquatic species have gills, usually formed by extensions of the skin on the inner surface of the mantle, called true gills (ctenidia). On each gill plate, gill filaments grow on both sides or one side of the gill axis, and cilia grow on the gills. In some species the true gills disappear, and respiration takes place through the skin surface or through secondary gills formed on the skin surface (opisthobranchs). In terrestrial species, part of the mantle forms a lung chamber densely covered with a vascular network, by which they breathe in air.

Shellfish feeding methods are divided into predation and filter feeding. Predatory species can be further divided into herbivorous and carnivorous. Many primitive gastropods such as abalone, top shells and limpets, and many pulmonates such as pond snails and clausiliid snails, are herbivorous.

The lifestyle of shellfish varies by species. Terrestrial species belong to the gastropods and all crawl on land using their muscular, sturdy foot.

Aquatic species have lifestyles that include planktonic, swimming, crawling, sessile, boring and parasitic types.

2. How do shellfish reproduce?

Different shellfish have different reproductive methods, mainly reproducing by laying eggs. Some reproduce through mating and fertilization, while others release sperm and eggs separately into the water or into the mother's gill cavity or “uterus” to be fertilized.

The reproductive system of shellfish includes the gonads, reproductive ducts, copulatory organs and some accessory glands, and they are usually dioecious or hermaphroditic.
