When this big treasure was first found, it looked like this: bare branches, no leaves, and not much of a root system, looking just like firewood for cooking. In fact, it's called a Chinese ash (Fraxinus chinensis) mountain-collected stump! Grow it into a bonsai, and its leaves are verdant and it's worth a fortune. No wonder it's called the "king of bonsai"!
1. Prune the tree stump
Carefully examine the tree stump. If there are any rotten spots on the roots or branches, prune them off, then use a knife to make a ring cut along the roots, cutting a ring of slanted cuts about 1 cm wide to expose fresh root base, which is more conducive to sending out new roots.
2. Soak the roots in a carbendazim solution
Soak the stump's roots in a carbendazim solution. The wounds on the branches can be smeared with carbendazim to sterilize. After half an hour, take it out and put it in a cool, ventilated place to dry.
3. Apply river sand soil to the cut ends of the branches
Evenly apply river sand to the cut ends at the top of the branches, filling the cut ends completely.
4. Seal the cut ends of the branches with a plastic bag
Wrap a thicker plastic bag over the cut ends, then tie the plastic bag with string. This can retain moisture, promote new buds, and improve the survival rate.
5. Prepare rooting powder and alcohol
Buy some rooting powder, and prepare alcohol and a small dish.
6. Pour the rooting powder into the dish
Tear open the rooting powder packet and pour it into the dish.
7. Pour alcohol into the rooting powder
Rooting powder dissolves better in alcohol. If you don't have alcohol, clean water works too.
8. Stir the alcohol and rooting powder evenly
Use a small stick to stir the rooting powder and alcohol evenly.
9. Pour the rooting powder solution into a water basin
Find a large basin big enough to hold the tree stump, pour clean water into the basin, filling it 1/3 full, then pour the rooting powder solution into the basin and stir so it dissolves evenly in the water.
10. Put the roots into the water basin
Place the stump's roots upright in the water. If the stump is relatively fresh, soak it for 2-4 hours; if it's not very fresh, you can extend it to about 12 hours, so the stump absorbs enough water.
11. Line the bottom of the pot with mesh
Find a relatively large flower pot and line the drainage hole at the bottom with mesh to prevent soil from leaking out.
12. Prepare the soil in layers
As shown in the picture below, put a mix of river sand and plain soil at the bottom of the pot, filling half the pot's volume; the ratio of river sand to plain soil is 3:2, then cover with pure river sand.
13. Plant the tree stump in the pot
After the stump has finished soaking in the rooting water, take it out and plant it shallowly in the pot.
14. Pile a ring of pure river sand around the roots
Find a piece of hard cardboard, insert it in a ring around the roots into the river sand, tie it firmly with string, then pour pure river sand inside the cardboard, making it look like the picture below. Pour the used rooting water into the flower pot, just water it thoroughly.
15. Cover with a plastic bag
Put a plastic bag over the tree stump, remember to poke 3 holes for ventilation. This can raise humidity and temperature, promote root and new bud sprouting. Put it in a cool, ventilated place, keep the soil slightly moist, and in about half a month new buds will grow! Then just put it in a sunny place!
