How Do Baby Turtles Get Through Winter? A Detailed Guide to Winter Care Methods
Baby turtles are one of the pets people like to keep nowadays. Many people find them adorable, and they are easy to keep, plus you don't need to take them out for walks. So,how do baby turtles get through winter?
1. Temperature
(1) In the Northeast, Northwest and northern regions, winter temperatures are very low, generally below 0°C, so you can keep the baby turtle in a heated room for the winter. These places all have heating, and the temperature is usually between 15 and 18°C, so the baby turtle will not freeze to death in such an environment.
(2) In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Central Plains region, winter temperatures are relatively low, and the Huang-Huai region also has a long freezing period. You can consider using a heating rod to raise the temperature for the winter, or you can prepare a plastic box, spread moist soil or mixed sand and soil in it, bury the turtle, and spray water once every few days to keep it moist.
(3) In the Southeast, Southwest and southern regions, winter temperatures are not very low, basically between 5 and 15°C, so you can keep the turtle indoors, and the turtle generally will not freeze to death.
2. Water level
(1) When the temperature is above 10 degrees: the water level in the tank can remain at the usual level, that is, 2 times the turtle's body height.
(2) When the temperature is below 10 degrees: the water level in the tank should be kept at 2-3 cm. If it is at the normal water level, once the temperature drops suddenly beyond the turtle's cold tolerance limit, it may freeze to death; if the turtle is buried in sand and soil, spray water once every few days to keep it moist.
3. Food
Feed normally in winter. Turtle feed is quite varied, mainly including animal-based feed, plant-based feed and mixed feed. Animal-based feed can be animal scraps such as pig blood, internal organs, earthworms, yellow mealworms, small fish and shrimp, snails, mussels and shellfish, etc. Plant-based feed can be soybean cake, peanut cake, corn, sorghum, wheat, etc.
