2. What are the toad farming techniques?

1. Building the farm

Set up a fence 1 m high around the site. Inside, set up breeding ponds and spawning and hatching ponds. The area depends on the scale. Ensure an adequate water source and convenient drainage and irrigation; leave open ground in or beside the ponds for planting lawn grass or vegetables, and stock the ponds with an appropriate amount of aquatic plants. Raise yellow mealworms, maggots, and earthworms or install lights to attract insects to increase feed.

2. Artificial breeding

Capture and raise Chinese toads, flower-backed toads, and black-spectacled toads as breeding stock. Adult toads lay eggs at 10°C, about 5000 eggs each time; place them in a hatching pond, and at a water temperature of 18-24°C the tadpoles hatch after 3-4 days; strengthen feeding.

3. Stocking density

Raise 2000-4000 small tadpoles per sq m; after 20 days reduce to 500-1000, and for young toads 30-40. They must be raised in separate ponds and groups according to different developmental stages.

4. Feed formulation

Newly hatched tadpoles are fed after 5 days with fresh, palatable feed such as cooked egg yolk and water fleas, twice a day. Young toads are fed feed such as maggots, earthworms, yellow mealworms, and chlorella. Adult toads have a large food intake and can be fed a mixture of soybean cake, bran, flour, fish meal, and sophora leaf powder.

5. Disease and pest control

Toads have few diseases; the main thing is to prevent harm from rats, snakes, birds, and so on. Maintain the fences and patrol them, and in winter move them to burrows or underwater soil to overwinter safely.

3. What value do toads have?

1. Toad venom is a precious Chinese medicinal material; it refers to the dried product of the white secretion from the toad's post-orbital glands and skin glands. It contains a variety of biological components and has effects such as reducing swelling, relieving pain, detoxifying, strengthening the heart, promoting urination, fighting cancer, and resisting radiation, and can be used to treat heart failure, stomatitis, pharyngitis, and so on. Germany has already used toad venom preparations in clinical treatment of coronary heart disease, and Japan uses toad venom as a raw material to produce “life-saving pills”. More than 50 kinds of Chinese patent medicines, including the famous Liushen Pills, Meihua Dianshe Dan, Yili Yatong Pills, and Huachansu Injection, all contain toad venom components.

2. Dried toad skin refers to the dried carcass of a toad with the internal organs removed; it is cold in nature and bitter in taste, and can be used to treat infantile malnutrition, chronic bronchitis, carbuncles and sores, sore and swollen throat, and so on. In recent years it has been used for various cancerous tumors or in combination with chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat cancer.

3. Toad skin is the keratinous membrane they naturally shed, and it has a relatively good therapeutic effect on chronic liver disease, various cancers, chronic bronchitis, sores and carbuncles, and so on.

In addition, the toad's head, tongue, liver, and gallbladder can all be used as medicine, and its meat is tender and delicious, making it a nutritious and tasty delicacy. Therefore, its farming prospects are still quite considerable.
