People who have kept turtles also know that there is a kind of turtle called the grass turtle, so what exactly is the difference between the grass turtle and the Chinese grass turtle?

1. The difference between the grass turtle and the Chinese grass turtle

The Chinese scientific name of the grass turtle is the Chinese grass turtle, referring to the same animal, and there is no difference. The grass turtle is also called the black turtle, grass turtle, golden-thread turtle, etc., and is mainly distributed in mainland China, Taiwan, China and other places.

2. The living habits of the grass turtle

The grass turtle is an amphibious reptile, mainly inhabiting rivers, lakes, reservoirs, ponds and other waters. During the day it mostly stays hidden in the water, and when the summer is hot it gathers in groups to seek shady places.

The grass turtle is gentle in temperament and is an omnivorous animal, mainly eating small fish, shrimp, snails, mussels, etc. When the water temperature drops below 15°C, it lies quietly in the silt at the bottom of the water or in soft soil with covering material to hibernate. The hibernation period generally runs from November to early April of the following year. When the water temperature rises to 15°C, it comes out of its burrow to move about, and at a water temperature of 18°C to 20°C it begins to feed.

3. Prevention and treatment of common diseases of the grass turtle

1. Shell rot disease

Symptoms: The turtle's carapace and plastron and the four limbs have white spots (early symptoms), which slowly become red patches. When pressed hard, there will be bloody water, and in severe cases the shell will rot and perforate.

Prevention and treatment method: Clean the diseased area on the shell thoroughly, then apply gentian violet, then apply erythromycin eye ointment, or clear the diseased area and directly fill it with oxytetracycline powder, and keep it dry.

2. White eye disease

Symptoms: The turtle's eyes become inflamed and gradually turn grayish-white and swollen. The cornea and its surroundings become ulcerated due to inflammation, and the outside of the eyeball is covered by a layer of white secretion, making the turtle unable to eat, and even causing blindness and gradual death.

Prevention and treatment method: Apply chlortetracycline eye ointment to the diseased area, 2 times a day; chloramphenicol eye drops can also be used. It is best to be able to sunbathe for 2 hours every day (not exposure to strong sunlight), which helps reduce inflammation. The rearing box must be disinfected.
