The rutin chicken is the smallest quail in the world, developed by crossbreeding the barred buttonquail and the blue-breasted quail over many years. It is also called the mini chicken, named for its eggs, which are rich in rutin, a compound that can lower blood pressure. So, what is the lifespan of a rutin chicken?

1. Lifespan of the rutin chicken

The rutin chicken's lifespan is probably a few years. It breeds from June to August, laying 4-8 eggs per clutch. The eggs are pale olive-brown or pale yellow, sometimes with fine, sparse dark speckles. Under captive breeding conditions, annual egg production can reach more than 300 eggs, and the incubation period is 16 days.

2. Where does the rutin chicken live?

In China, the rutin chicken is distributed in the south, from west to east in Xinping, Funing, Luchun, Yuanyang and Jinping in Yunnan; Pingtang in Guizhou; Beihai, Hepu, Guigang and Baise in Guangxi; Guangzhou in Guangdong; Hainan; and the mountainous areas of Shaowu and Wuyishan in Fujian and Taiwan, China. It mainly lives in plains and low mountain areas, often inhabiting riverside grasslands and tall reeds in marshes, and it also wanders in small flocks along the edges of scrub and bamboo forests.

3. What food does the rutin chicken eat?

The rutin chicken eats grain seeds, grass seeds and the like, and also eats insects and spiders, especially termites. Because of its tiny size, the feed pellets for captive breeding must be small enough, and green feed such as vegetables must be chopped very finely.
