What are the differences between sunfish and tilapia?
Tilapia is a major aquaculture product in our country, with delicious flesh and few bones. Sunfish all have exceptionally striking colors and are often kept as ornamental fish. In terms of morphology, the body shape of sunfish somewhat resembles tilapia. So, what are the differences between sunfish and tilapia?
1. What are the differences between sunfish and tilapia?
Different species: Tilapia originated in Africa and belongs to the genus Tilapia, a genus of tropical fish; sunfish originated in central and southern America and belongs to the family Centrarchidae, a freshwater fish; different body colors: Sunfish have more colors on their bodies, with the head and chest to the belly being pale orange-red or pale orange-yellow, and the back being pale blue-gray with some pale gray-black vertical stripes; while tilapia only has gray and brown on their bodies.
2. Living habits of tilapia
Tilapia inhabit the middle and lower layers and are omnivorous fish that mainly feed on plant-based food. Tilapia cannot tolerate low temperatures and will freeze to death at a water temperature of around 10°C. Some species of tilapia exhibit mouthbrooding behavior, in which the female holds the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch into young fish; this parental care behavior is very beneficial to their reproduction. Before breeding, the males of some species of tilapia dig up the bottom soil to build basin-shaped nests and are strongly territorial; the female lays eggs in the nest, and after hatching, the female holds the young fish in her mouth for protection.
3. Living habits of sunfish
Sunfish are warm-water small-bodied fish with a wide suitable growth temperature range. They can live at water temperatures of 1~38°C, and at a water temperature of 2°C they can still safely overwinter in natural environments. Therefore, in the southern regions of our country they can completely overwinter naturally. They have wide adaptability, omnivorous feeding habits, high group yield, and can reproduce naturally.
Although sunfish and tilapia are somewhat similar in body shape, the differences between their body colors are still very great.
