What Do Stag Beetles Eat? A Detailed Explanation of Stag Beetle Diet and Main Foods

In Sichuan, stag beetles are called jiajia bugs, and each region has a different name for them. For those of you who want to raise them, do you know what stag beetles usually eat?

1. What Do Stag Beetles Eat

Stag beetles like to eat plant leaves and sap, and they have a strong preference for sweet things. During feeding, you can try gradually transitioning from mildly sweet foods to foods with a higher sugar content.

2. Key Points for Keeping Them

1. When it comes to keeping them, note that stag beetles have powerful mandibles whether male or female. It is best to use a sturdy container with a height more than 2 times the body length of the stag beetle, so that some aggressive individuals do not destroy the rearing container and escape, or damage their beautiful mandibles in the process of destruction. Males and females should be kept separately, because male stag beetles will harm female stag beetles.

2. Rearing Larvae

The methods for rearing stag beetle larvae can be divided into four types:

Fungus bottle rearing: suitable for most large flat stag beetles and large stag beetles, rainbow stag beetles, some sawtooth stag beetles, and some fork-horned stag beetles.

Fermented wood shavings rearing: the vast majority of stag beetles can be reared with fermented wood shavings.

Humus soil rearing: those whose feeding habits are relatively similar to large rhinoceros beetles and that eat humus soil include some species of the genus Euchirus and some species of the genus Cyclommatus.

Log rearing: because good wood is difficult to obtain, it is already rarely used.
