Detailed Explanation of the Steps and Methods for Making a DIY Quail Cage
The quail is a bird with a relatively small body size. Its plumage is brown with distinct straw-yellow lanceolate stripes and irregular markings. Because quail eggs are delicious, more people are now raising quail artificially. To reduce expenses, some breeders want to make a DIY quail cage.
1. DIY Quail Cage
The quail cage can be made from wooden boards or plastic, and is generally made with 5-6 tiers, with a dropping tray set below each tier. The cage length, width and height can be 100 cm * 60 cm * 30 cm, with 2-3 cage doors, and a feed trough and water trough installed outside the cage.
2. What Do Quails Eat?
Quails often move about in plains, wastelands, streamsides and hillside and hilly areas where dense weeds or low shrubs grow, and sometimes also come near cultivated land. They mainly eat weed seeds, beans, grains, berries, tender leaves and tender shoots, and in summer they eat insects and larvae, small invertebrates and so on.
3. Are Quails Migratory Birds?
Quails are migratory birds and often inhabit warm climates. They cannot fly high or for long periods, and often hide by day and come out at night. They like to migrate and fly in flocks at night, and mostly gather in groups when migrating. There are two wild quail species in China. Each year from June to July they breed in western Xinjiang and eastern Inner Mongolia, then migrate south to overwinter. Each year from March to April they migrate back to Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and other places to breed, with migration distances of around 400-1000 km.
There may be three routes for the quail's southward migration: migrating directly south from Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, reaching Liaoning, the banks of the Yellow River in Hebei and the LÜdu area of Tibet respectively to overwinter; going from the Qamdo area around the Qinghai-Tibet region through Sichuan, Shaanxi and Henan and continuing south to reach the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; and going from the Qamdo area through Yunnan and Guizhou to migrate to the southeastern coastal areas.
