Known as “ginseng of the water,” loach is an aquatic product farmed in both northern and southern China. Although it looks very much like a snake, it is still quite delicious to eat. Today, artificial loach farming is fairly common, so how many jin of loach can be farmed per mu of land? What key farming points should farmers pay attention to?

1. How many jin of loach can be farmed per mu of land?

It is understood that for about one mu, 50,000 to 100,000 young fry 3—4 cm long can be stocked per mu. Before stocking the fry, base fertilizer should be spread, mainly organic fertilizer, to cultivate large amounts of zooplankton as feed for the loach. After stocking the fry, gradually increase feed feeding and apply additional organic fertilizer. The main types of feed fed include rice bran, soybean cake, wheat bran, soybean dregs, silkworm pupa powder, earthworms and food processing waste, etc. Fertilizers include human and livestock manure, crop straw compost, etc. If the water temperature is above 30°C or below 10°C, the feeding amount should be reduced. Generally, after 8—10 months of rearing, they can be harvested, and high-yield ponds can reach 250—400 kg per mu. Each fish about 15 cm in body length and 10—15 g in weight reaches commercial specifications.

1. What key points should farmers pay attention to when farming loach?

1. Stocking seed and water quality regulation

Stock 280-300 kg per mu of loach seedlings of uniform size, smooth body surface, free of disease and deformity, and 300 fish/kg. Before stocking, soak and disinfect them in 3%-4% salt water at a water temperature of 10-15°C for 15-25 minutes.

When the loach seed has just entered the pond, keep the pond water depth at 10-20 cm. Later, as the loach seed grows, gradually deepen the water level to the required depth. Keep it shallower at ordinary times, and deepen it somewhat during hot high temperatures, and frequently add new water to maintain a good water environment. When the weather is muggy, the pond water is prone to oxygen deficiency. If loach are found swimming to the water surface to gulp air, new water should be added promptly or oxygen-increasing measures should be taken.

2. Pond soil quality

Soil quality has a great influence on the effect of loach rearing. Production practice shows that loach grown in clayey soil has a yellow body, more fat, softer bones and a delicious taste; loach grown in sandy soil has a black body, slightly less fat, harder bones and a poorer taste.

3. Feed selection

Loach is a small omnivorous fish with a very wide feed source. Daphnia, earthworms, maggots and so on are natural food organisms for loach. Under artificial farming conditions, rice bran, soybean cake, soybean dregs, blood meal, wheat bran and so on can be fed. The feed intake of loach is closely related to water temperature. In March, the daily feeding amount is 1% of the total body weight of the loach; from April to June, the daily feeding amount is 4% of the total body weight of the loach; from July to August, the daily feeding amount is 1% of the total body weight of the loach; from September to October, the daily feeding amount is 4% of the total body weight of the loach.

4. Feeding techniques

When raising loach in ponds, do not feed for 2 days after the loach fry are put into the pond, and wait until the loach fry have adapted to the pond before feeding. Achieve fixed timing, fixed quantity, fixed quality and fixed location.

When feeding loach during the rearing process, you can judge whether the actual feeding amount is appropriate by observing the surface phenomena of the pond. First, look at the length of feeding time; second, look at the growth size of individual loach; third, look at movement on the water surface; fourth, look at changes in water quality.
