Can Salmon Still Be Eaten? Analysis of Farming Prospects, Methods and Nutritional Value
Over the past two days, after the novel coronavirus was detected on a salmon cutting board at the Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market, salmon immediately became the focus of attention. So can salmon still be eaten? What are the future farming prospects? How is it farmed? What is its nutritional value?
1. What nutritional value does salmon have?
1. Salmon is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, which can effectively lower blood lipids and blood cholesterol and help prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. Eating it twice a week can reduce the probability of death from a heart attack by one third. Salmon also contains a substance called astaxanthin, which is a very powerful antioxidant. The Ω-3 fatty acids it contains are essential substances for the brain, retina and nervous system, and have the effect of enhancing brain function, preventing Alzheimer's disease and preventing vision decline;
2. Salmon can effectively prevent the occurrence and development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, has very high nutritional value, and enjoys the reputation of “treasure of the water”;
3. The flesh is delicious, and the eggs are also an excellent raw material for caviar.
2. Can salmon still be eaten?
Salmon can still be eaten, but when consuming raw and cold seafood products you still need to be more vigilant, and eat them after high-temperature cooking. During the processing of fresh food, pay attention to hygiene, wash your hands frequently, and avoid the risk of cross-contamination.
Moreover, as a lower non-mammalian organism, salmon does not have the ability to transmit the virus to humans.
In addition, Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that the positive test for the virus on the salmon cutting board does not explain much. The virus may have come from contamination, such as contamination from other items, including droplets emitted when staff or infected people speak in front of the cutting board or during transactions, all of which may cause contamination of the cutting board. Therefore, it cannot be said that salmon is the source of transmission; there is no direct evidence in this regard.
3. What are the future farming prospects for salmon?
Salmon has delicious flesh and is rich in nutrients, and is also rich in biologically active substances such as EPA and DHA. It is a widely popular seafood product, so its future farming prospects are still considerable.
4. How is salmon farmed?
1. Farming varieties
Salmon is divided into freshwater salmon and seawater salmon, and at present artificial farming in China is mostly freshwater farming, so you must choose varieties that are suitable for freshwater and have relatively strong disease resistance.
2. Farming water quality
Salmon was originally a marine fish, so when using freshwater farming you must pay attention to freshwater water quality. Do not farm it casually in ponds or draw water casually. A water depth of 1-1.5m is most suitable.
3. Farming feed
At present, for artificial salmon farming it is best to use pelleted feed for domestication and feeding. The roughage in it should preferably contain half protein. The number of feedings is determined by water temperature. When the water temperature is below 8°C, feed once each in the morning and afternoon every day; when the water temperature is 8-15°C, feed once each in the morning, noon and evening, each time to eight-tenths full.
4. Farming water temperature and density
For artificial salmon farming, the fry density is 50 fish/sq m. If too dense, it will cause uneven nutrition for the salmon. Because salmon is a cold-water fish, the most suitable water temperature for its growth is between 13-15°C.
The above is an introduction to whether salmon can be eaten and how to farm it. Although there is no problem with eating salmon, for safety it is still recommended to eat it after high-temperature heating.
