Latest Overview of Bupleurum Production Areas: A Complete List of Major Producing Regions Nationwide
Bupleurum, also known as bamboo-leaf bupleurum or grasshopper leg, is a medicinal herb listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The medicinal part is the dried root of the Umbelliferae plant Bupleurum chinense or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium. It is harvested in spring and autumn, with stems, leaves, sand and mud removed, then dried. There are northern and southern Bupleurum types. Below, let us take a look at their production area distribution!
Production Area Distribution of Northern Bupleurum
Northern Bupleurum, also known as bamboo-leaf bupleurum, hard-seedling bupleurum, chive-leaf bupleurum (Anhui), Tianjin bupleurum, etc., grows in relatively dry hillsides, fields and roadsides. Its production areas are distributed across Northeast China, North China, East China, Central South China, Southwest China, as well as Shaanxi, Gansu and other places.
It is mainly produced in Northeast China and Henan Province, Hebei Province, Shaanxi Province, and is also produced in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province and Gansu Province.
Production Area Distribution of Southern Bupleurum
Bupleurum scorzonerifolium is commonly called southern Bupleurum, and is mainly produced in Northeast China, Shaanxi Province, Inner Mongolia, Hebei Province, Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province and other places.
Production Environment of Bupleurum
Bupleurum often grows wild in mountainous areas below 1 500 m in altitude, on barren slopes of hills, in grass clumps, roadsides, forest edges and forest gaps. It has strong adaptability, prefers a slightly cool and moist climate, is relatively tolerant of cold and drought, and avoids high temperatures and waterlogged low-lying land.
Bupleurum seeds exhibit a physiological after-ripening phenomenon. Stratification treatment can promote after-ripening, but under dry conditions, the after-ripening process can also be completed after 4—5 months. The suitable germination temperature is 15-25°C, and the germination rate can reach 50%-60%. The seed lifespan is 1 year, and the suitable temperature for plant growth is 20-25°C.
