Ophiopogon japonicus, also known as lilyturf, ribbon grass, maidong, cundong and so on, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Liliaceae family. Its production areas are mainly divided among Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangxi, Sichuan and other places. Representative products include Zhemaidong and Chuanmaidong. Let us take a look below at the production area distribution of Ophiopogon japonicus!

Production area distribution of Ophiopogon japonicus

1. Zhemaidong: Zhemaidong, also known as Hangmaidong, Jianmaidong and so on, is Ophiopogon japonicus produced in the Jianqiao area of Hangzhou, Zhejiang, and later broadly refers to that produced in Zhejiang. Its quality is the best, and it is a genuine medicinal material. Its main production areas are Yuyao, Hangzhou, Cixi, Xiaoshan and other places in Zhejiang.

2. Chuanmaidong: Chuanmaidong, also known as Chuandong, is mainly produced in the Mianyang area of Sichuan. The Ophiopogon japonicus produced on the Fujiang alluvial plain is considered the best, also called Fucheng maidong, and is sold throughout the country and exported.

Growth habits of Ophiopogon japonicus

Ophiopogon japonicus prefers a warm, humid and relatively shaded environment, is cold-resistant, and avoids strong light and high temperatures. When flowers appear in July, the underground tuberous roots begin to form. September to October is the peak period for root development, November is the tuberous root expansion period, and after temperatures rise at the end of February, tuberous root expansion accelerates.

Ophiopogon japonicus seeds have a certain dormant characteristic. A low temperature of about 5°C for 2 to 3 months can break dormancy and allow normal germination. The seed lifespan is 1 year, and in production, division propagation is usually used.

China's hometown of Ophiopogon japonicus

1. Xiangmaidong: Xiangmaidong is a specialty of Xiangfan City, Hubei Province, and is a Chinese geographical indication product. Oumiao Town in Xiangfan City is known as China's hometown of Ophiopogon japonicus and ranks first among China's three major Ophiopogon japonicus production areas. Its yield per unit area is higher than that of Chuanmaidong and Hangmaidong, and its quality is excellent, with the characteristics of being white, dry, clean, uniform and large.

2. Fucheng maidong: Fucheng maidong, also known as Chuanmaidong, Mianmaidong and so on, is produced in Santai County, Sichuan Province. The production area is mainly concentrated in nine towns (townships) in the Fujiang River basin of Santai County, centered on Huayuan Town. It is one of China's precious traditional Chinese medicinal materials and has a cultivation history of more than 500 years. In 2006, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine approved the implementation of geographical indication product protection for Fucheng maidong.

3. Zhemaidong: Zhemaidong, also called maidong, cundong and so on, is also known as Yaomaidong because its production area originally belonged to Yuyao. It is one of the “Zhejiang Eight Flavors” of Zhejiang traditional Chinese medicine specialties. It is short, plump and full, yellow and bright in color, and its quality is superior to that produced in Sichuan and Fujian.
