Notopterygium, also known as Qiangqing, Huqiang Envoy, Huwang Envoy, etc., is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Notopterygium in the Apiaceae family. It is produced in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places, and often grows in forest edges and thickets at an altitude of 2000-4000 m. It has extremely high cultivation value and medicinal value. Now let us take a look at the cultivation techniques of Notopterygium!

Growth Habits of Notopterygium

Notopterygium is produced in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places, and grows in forest edges and thickets at an altitude of 2000-4000 m. It prefers a cool and humid climate, is cold-tolerant, and slightly shade-tolerant. It is suitable for cultivation in sandy loam soil with deep soil layers, loose texture, good drainage and rich humus, and is not suitable for planting in low-lying and wet areas. It is propagated by seeds or rhizomes.

Propagation Techniques of Notopterygium

1. Seed propagation: Harvest mature seeds in autumn, dry them in the sun, and sow them directly in spring after the soil thaws. Open holes at a row spacing of 33 cm and a hole spacing of 23-27 cm, with a depth of 5-7 cm. Sow more than 10 seeds per hole, cover with about 1-2 cm of compost or humus soil, and water. Use about 15 kg of seeds per hectare.

2. Rhizome propagation: Carry out during autumn or spring harvest. Select rhizomes with buds and cut them into small sections, with each section having 1-2 buds. Plant in furrows, opening trenches at a row spacing of 33 cm, with a trench depth of 15-17 cm and a width of 15 cm. Place the rhizomes horizontally in the trench, placing 1 section every 8-10 cm, cover with 14-16 cm of farmyard manure or fine soil, and water.

Cultivation Techniques of Notopterygium

1. Land preparation and fertilization: For Notopterygium cultivation, choose fields with high terrain and good drainage, and carry out intensive and careful tillage. Apply 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 20 kg of urea, and 50 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer per mu, then wait to sow seeds or transplant rhizomes.

2. Intertillage and weeding: After the Notopterygium seedlings emerge uniformly, attention should be paid to intertillage and weeding. Water in dry weather to preserve soil moisture, and drain promptly in rainy weather.

3. Reasonable fertilization: Apply topdressing to Notopterygium once around the Beginning of Autumn, applying 10 kg of urea and 10 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu. After cleaning the field in winter, spread a layer of farmyard manure.

4. Flower removal and bud removal: After Notopterygium buds appear, except for plants retained for seed production, the flower buds should be removed to prevent nutrient consumption.

5. Pest and disease control: Notopterygium has relatively few diseases. If found, control them by conventional methods. The main pest is the larvae of the yellow swallowtail butterfly, which bite and eat the leaves. Use pyrethroid pesticides to kill them during control. Use phoxim to kill underground pests.

6. Harvesting and processing: Notopterygium is generally harvested in autumn 2-3 years after sowing, after the aboveground stems and leaves wither. Remove the rhizome dug out from the ground, remove the reed head, clean off the soil, and dry it in the sun or by artificial drying before selling it as medicinal material. The yield per mu is 300 kg.
